Five room-turnover questions worth asking before you expand clinic hours
Before adding evening clinics, check whether existing rooms are clearing cleanly between patients.
Extending hours feels like the obvious fix when the diary is full. It is also expensive if rooms already sit idle between morning and afternoon blocks.
Ask how long a room stays occupied after the patient leaves. Cleaning, restocking, and note completion all stretch the gap. Administrators who time a handful of turnovers for one typical day often discover fifteen to twenty minutes that never appear on the appointment system.
Ask which rooms are preferred and which are avoided. Preference clusters create artificial bottlenecks. A chart that shows utilization by room — not only by provider — makes that pattern visible.
Ask whether procedure rooms and consult rooms share the same recovery or waiting space. Shared choke points do not show up in a simple appointment count.
Ask what happens when a session runs long. Does the next patient wait in the corridor, or does the following room stay empty? Both answers change how you read capacity.
Finally, ask what “full” means for your clinic. Some sites feel full because the waiting area is crowded while two consult rooms sit quiet. Visual boards that separate waiting pressure from room use help administrators argue for the right fix — process, not necessarily more evenings.
